“Not being disabled is certainly not an achievement, but a gift that can be taken from any of us at any time.”
(Richard von Weizsäcker, sixth Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany)
In an inclusive society, all people, regardless of their individual circumstances, can participate and contribute. Those who have to overcome barriers feel—rightly—excluded. However, those who feel included are more willing to take on responsibility and help shape their environment in a positive way. Democracy needs inclusion. It thrives when many diverse people are involved, bringing their unique perspectives and experiences. Inclusion also aims to ensure that not only the loud and strong are heard.
Universities and higher education institutions are among the employers with the greatest diversity in terms of staff—diverse in origin, education and training, roles and skills, development and lifestyle. Our colleagues with severe disabilities are, of course, part of this diversity. However, their proportion among the total workforce is not as high as it should be according to legal requirements. We will advocate for more people with severe disabilities to be employed at FU than is currently the case.
