A Sign of Integrity: Why Our Chair Has Stepped Down
Pragmatism or ideology: Which approach really helps employees?
A Staff Council chair should be able to stand behind the decisions they sign off on. If this is no longer possible, work becomes a source of stress – and a bad omen if there ever was one for future cooperation within the council.
Unfortunately, it has recently come to our attention that ideological clashes much too often take precedence over practical solutions. To put it plainly, not everything that is detrimental to our employer is automatically beneficial to us as employees. This false equivalence does everyone a massive disservice and more often than not results in deadlock.
A Staff Council that is unable to act has very real consequences: delays in hiring new staff, upgrading pay scale groupings, and adopting important service agreements ultimately have a negative impact on precisely the colleagues whose interests the council is meant to represent.
We – as the FUBB – believe in a different approach. We do not see Freie Universität as an opponent, but instead consider it to be a shared workplace that we want to improve through dialogue – for the good of all employees.
